I first met Derek at Exeter University, we were in the same Master's programme and taking some of the same classes. He was such a presence in the classroom, witty and intelligent but so friendly and encouraging to others. We became partners for most of our class projects, and he quickly became a cherished friend. Always so full of little stories about his escapes in life that were wonderful to hear and often had us rolling with laughter. We graduated together in 2013 and both went on to pursue a PhD, although at different Universities. Despite this we remained in contact and when I married in a very small ceremony in 2017 Derek was my choice of witness. We have such fond memories of that day and the joy the Derek brought to whatever room he was in will be deeply missed.
